Curriculum Intent

At NHTS we think and communicate as linguists.

We celebrate our students existing linguistic knowledge and cultural awareness. We show students how they can use languages both for travelling to different countries across the world and for future employment opportunities in this country and beyond.

Our curriculum is based upon the four key skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. We use our student’s knowledge of the English language or their own additional home language, and build upon this to introduce them to new challenges.

We build knowledge through a variety of engaging, enjoyable and diverse tasks, both in the classroom and at home. This knowledge can be recalled and applied across different topic areas. Students can demonstrate this knowledge in their class work and book work. We pay particular focus to grammar, vocabulary and phonics.

What do we do?

In Years 7, 8 and 9 students study Spanish. In Years 10 and 11 students have the option of completing an AQA GCSE in either (or both) Spanish, French and/or Urdu.

We offer additional language GCSEs to students where possible, such as Arabic, Russian, Greek, Polish, Portuguese and Italian.

A day in the life…

Students study a range of topics such as school, holidays, food, fashion and many others.  Students learn a range of vocabulary through interactive language games and challenges.  They practice speaking and writing skills through tasks such as creating scripts and acting out scenarios. As well as learning the language, students learn about life in Spanish and French speaking countries.

What career?

Universities strongly favour young people who have language qualifications as these show communication and linguistic skills.  Languages also open the door to working abroad full time or for a gap year. In the long term, languages can help to obtain jobs in teaching and education, translating and interpreting, global businesses, hospitality and tourism, media and publishing and many others.
