Staff News

26 April – Update from Andrew Fell

Additional Staff Inset Day – Friday 5 July

As previously confirmed, we will be using the above date as an additional inset day.  Parents/Carers have been informed.  Should this be a non-working day for you, there is the option to be paid to be involved.  If this is the case, please let Lindsay know via the link below.  It would be great to have everyone there if possible.

INSET Day – for staff not contracted to attend

Further details to follow but the general focus is on ensuring we are fully prepared for September (there will, of course, be the usual two inset days at the beginning of the new academic year.

Staff Well-Being Morning

On the morning of Friday 24 May, we have a mobile barista coming to NHTS.  All colleagues, including the Facilities Management and Kitchen teams, can have a hot drink and a pastry of their choosing.  More details to follow.  For colleagues who don’t work on a Friday, you will receive a costa coffee voucher.

Colin Dawson

As you may be aware, Colin has moved on to work in another Kirklees school.  Whilst site staff are not direct employees of NHTS, they are most definitely our colleagues and many of you have known Col for a long time.  We are going to invite him back to NHTS later in the academic year to say thank you and goodbye.  If you would like to contribute to his leaving gift, please see Sue Wilcockson for bank details or cash donations.

Hopefully, Col will be able to visit us towards the end of this half term.

Monday 6 May

A reminder that the above date is a bank holiday; not simply an extended weekend prior to my birthday!

Have a lovely weekend.

Andrew

26 April – Iceland Trip

As some colleagues will be aware, there is a residential trip to Iceland next year.  The dates are Thursday 3 April 2025 – Sunday 6 April 2025.  Jess Marshall has led the process brilliantly to date and will be leading the trip.  We have two additional staff places and would like expressions of interest from colleagues who are available for these dates and would like to go in a supervisory capacity.

A proposed itinerary of the trip is below:

Day 1   Fly into Keflavík; Visit the Reykjanes Peninsula, stay overnight in Reykjavík

Day 2   Complete part of the Golden Circle (Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Skogafoss waterfall, sólheimajökull glacier, reynisfjara beach), a possible Glacier Walk at Solheimajokull Glacer, stay overnight in Vik

Day 3   Complete part of the Golden Circle (Gulfoss waterfall, Geysir, Thingvellir National Park) stay overnight in Reykjavík

Day 4   Tour of Reykjavík, fly into Manchester

For clarity, there is no additional payment for going on the trip.

If you are interested in being part of it, please follow the link below to confirm.  The deadline for expressing an interest is Tuesday 7 May.

19 April – Update from Andrew Fell

Staffing Update

Congratulations to Jo Walsh who has secured a promoted position at another Kirklees school.  Jo’s leadership of the English department has been really successful and she has made a significant contribution across a variety of roles in her time at NHTS.  As always, please keep this confidential; it is Jo’s news to share with students.

A reminder that we have a number of currently advertised roles for which colleagues who are suitably qualified and experienced are welcome to apply.

Staff Meeting

Thank you for attending Monday’s staff meeting.   A link to the slides can be found in the shared area.  As mentioned, the next twilight, calendared for Thursday 9 May, will focus on the introduction of Unifrog.  For staff who are not contracted to attend, additional hours can be claimed to do so.  If this is pertinent to you and you will be attending, please complete the survey below which will help with the planning of the session.  It will run from 3pm – 5:30pm

19 April – SCHOOL CALENDAR

The school calendar is accessible through your Office 365 email account.  This will allow you to view live information of all bookings such as trips, whole school meetings, parents’ evenings and other important events.

To set up the calendar for viewing (you only need to do this once):

  • Within Outlook, open your calendar
  • At the left hand side of the screen, above ‘My Calendar’ select ‘Add Calendar
  • Click ‘Add from directory
  • Select your email to search from
  • Type ‘school calendar’ and hit enter.  This will bring up the link to the school calendar.  Select OK
  • This will then be displayed as an option down the lefthand side of your calendar page

19 April – School Post

The Kirklees postal collection to schools ceased from 1st April due to the service no longer being financially viable.

We have very little outgoing physical mail due to electronic communication systems but there are times when physical mail still needs to be sent.

Going forward, our outgoing school post will go once per week on a Thursday and will be dropped off at a local post box.

No personal post please.

12 April – Update from Andrew Fell

Full Staff Meeting on Monday 15 April

This will run from 3:00pm – 3:30pm in the theatre.  I’d like all staff to be there.  Should this be outside of your contracted hours and you can attend, additional hours claim form can be submitted.  The main focus of the meeting is talk about plans to further develop NHTS’ Leadership and Achievement Programme and how this will be built into the curriculum for next academic year.  I’ll also be introducing the substance for the Twilight Inset calendared for Thursday 9 May.

Thank you for the great work this week.  Have a lovely weekend.

Andrew

12 April – DBS Reminder

DBS check
Reminder that if anyone is visiting school either in a paid or unpaid capacity who:
  • has the potential to come into unsupervised contact with children or
  • is in regulated activity with children

an Enhanced DBS with children’s barred list check is required unless the visitor is being escorted at ALL times by a member of school staff (being escorted means at breaks/lunch up to the toilet facilities etc.).

Please note there are other types of DBS checks which don’t offer this level of checking so don’t assume that someone with a DBS has the correct level of checks as it could be a Basic or Standard DBS check.
Visitors who are working with students in regulated activity or have the potential to come into unsupervised contact with students must present the original enhanced DBS disclosure certificate to school along with photo ID.  Please ensure a member of the office team have verified the DBS and checked photo ID.
Enhanced DBS certificate disclosures of criminal offences must be flagged to the senior line in order for a risk assessment to be conducted which will take into account the seriousness of any offence and relevance to the role in school; how long ago the offence occurred; circumstances around the incident etc.
Volunteers – all volunteers must go through Lindsay Taylor as a matter of course for the relevant DBS to be checked/verified and volunteering induction undertaken.
IF IN DOUBT PLEASE ASK OR ESCORT!
Please see below flowchart for information:
