Recently, I had the privilege of reading a Y9 response to a section from ‘Of Mice and Men’. The quality of this student’s work was superb. I have written to him with a commendation letter that will be delivered through his tutor group. I’d like to replicate this in creating a system for nominations that can be rewarded. There will be a link on FROG through which you can nominate students for a commendation; the deadline is the end of term. During the first couple of weeks after Easter, I will reward a selection (or maybe all) of the nominations using the same mechanism as the Year 9 student highlighted above. These students will be invited a rewards lunch and I think a badge would be a nice way to mark this too.
The idea is not to share it with students but to allow it to ‘dripfeed’ until the first set of badges are given out in assemblies. Please do not inform students you have nominated their work for a commendation – I want it to be a surprise for them and not all will necessarily given the commendation.
As for the criteria for nominations – I’ll leave that to your professional judgement.
